Are you interested in trying something different and mind expanding? Have you ever heard of a Danish “folkehøjskole” and want the chance to understand what they are really all about? Have you heard about Denmark and asked yourself what it would be like to live there? Well, if you have answered yes to any of these questions, please read on.
Danish “folkehøjskoler” (which translates to “folk high schools”) are nothing similar to what the translation sounds like. In fact, many people have found it very difficult to explain what they are, for it is so much more than any typical education system. There are many educational subjects taught in folkehøjskoler but what really make the experience, are the people, that are brought together in such places. Individuals are encouraged to push their thoughts and minds, within themselves and globally, on many different levels.
Løgumkloster Højskole, situated in the southern part of Denmark, is just one of those schools. It was established in 1960 in a small town named Løgumkloster, which is the home of a beautiful monastery dating back to the Middle Ages. You will find yourself in a peaceful, quaint town in the heart of Sønderjylland (the Southern part of Denmark’s mainland). Surrounded by farms, close to the ocean and German border, you will find yourself right in the middle of old Europe. Besides the subjects offered (which will be listed below), the school has much to offer. You will find yourself living in dorm-like rooms, mixed with people from both Danish heritage and International backgrounds. You can choose a single room, or to live with someone else.
There are also many facilities that you will have access to 24 hours a day: Living room (with table soccer and pool table), art studio, computers, musical instruments of all sorts (including a building separate from the main building as not to disturb others), gymnasium and a variety of nature outside. People come together daily to eat and drink coffee, and do they ever eat! You will soon learn the importance of food and drink in the Danish culture. As an old tradition in the folkehøjskole, there is “Morgensang” (morning singing), which is a mandatory practice done every morning to bring the group together, to sing and learn various things of religious, philosophical and life thoughts. There is also Sangaften (evening singing), which held once a week to allow students to show off their skills and learn new things in the world of music, together.
Folkehøjskoler, being of a democratic influence, also hold weekly meetings, which gives the students the opportunity to be involved in the way the school functions and to discuss way in which to improve life within the school. Each individual is also placed within a “Circle” (Living groups), which are responsible for some of the janitorial needs of the school. Don’t worry though; the duties are only maybe once a week! There are also many interesting things that you will want to participate in, held throughout the weeks. Often there are guest speakers invited to give lectures, dances and parties with the people you will be living with, movie showings, and much, much more to keep your schedule busy. There are also a few field trips that you will be able to attend including a special trip to Copenhagen and many more around Southern Denmark. A very special thing for this folkehøjskole is also the study trip to the capital of Germany. During this trip you will get the opportunity to see much of Berlin.
